| In reading over my notes am coming across some connections for the donnelly name that were and remain unrecognizabel in the transfer from gaelic to english. the english is mostly the pronunciation of the irish not based on any comparative meaning.. however somewhere I have here Fergal m Domnall or Feargal m Daniell
King of Ochla. in irish Focla reigeanna an fhocla-- the north
this Daniell is the son of O Mealechlainn I who died in 924.
in geneological table is discribed as Domnall or Daniell his father being Maelsechlainn and his mother Eithne the sister or daugther of Aedh Finnliath king of Ireland , Son of Niall Caille O Neill.
Daniell- Dan i ell- becomes dong aille as he was raised by his mother in her place the dong being a womans house dong aile become dong ely or dong Ely. Her house was or is Ely so he is donn i ely chief her house. She did not live with the king Aed Findliath who has a wife. he took his mothers name dun i elly. He is discribed as Domnall Mic Aed Finnliath which would make him a grandchild of Aed indicating Eithne the daughter of Aed not the sister.
he is known in history as Domnall Mac Aed or Mac Hugh. He is listed as having children with no mothers named being Feargal +939 ,Utthmaran , Donagh ,Conor and Cinaeh.
He is called Prince of Daire Calgai Prince of the oakwood of the gae or gai- spearmen.
the line of his son Niall who was killed in 936 along with his father Fergal, prince of Focla, and his grandson Muirchertach father of another Domnall.
Domnall was also the father of Donnchad +922, who married Urircadhae and their chlld was Flann +938. Her Grandson was Donchad and his grandson was Domnall and his grandson was Malachy 2 or Maelsechlainn .
the records kept by the annalists = 7 generations .
If you add Donchad Ua Mael, Flanns father, and his father Domnall [Daniell] her grandfather , there will be 9 generations and with the beginning Maeleachlainn we have the proverbial tenth generation.
Malachy 2 is the king who resigned the irish throne to Brain bourma and recovered it on the death of Brain at battle of ClonTarb and ruled till he died in 1022 Ad.
with this begins a new history tale that of Ardgar twin of Ardchu, Niall and Lochlain the history of the[ Mae leach lainn] for a century.
apparently Flann and her brother Donnchad both grandchildren of Maelechlainn I produced Mael Runaid. there is a listing of an Aed being the son of Mael Runaid + 949 but the child Maelsechlainn 2[ Malachy] was born in 949 and became king at 30 years of age 979 Ad.
Congal was hi king for 7 years at the birth of Malachy 2.
Aed was killed by Domnall Donn, grandson of Donchad m Daniell and himself + 950.
Aed Findliath who was son o Nial Caille O Neill was also the father of Constatine, King of Scotland.
Of Daniell [donnelly] children ,Flann caried the royal line. her sister Fedelm became abbyess of Clon Gronaich and Donagh was killed in 928.
so from Malachy 2 mic Donmall mac Donchad mic Flann mac Donnchad mac Daniell Mac Maeleachlain ! 10 generations .
Daniell or Domnall of Ely also had a son called Fergail m Daniell of Focla who had a son called Niall who died with Muirhcertack his grandson and his father in 936 survived by a Domnall.
this Muirchertack is also called Moriertagh m Neale or Moriarity killed in their victory over the Norse defending Aileach.
Fergal mic Domnall was tigerna an tiaisceirt of Aileach or Oileach now called an Grianna all alone up there on its hill beween Inishowen and Donegal. There may have been an abby there in the vacinity called Doimliag- eng or Doimlicc- irish. the stone church abby run by Mael Bride in 933 AD.
Flann +938 was also the mother or grandmother of Gormfliath +947 who married Nial Glundub O Neill.
their son was also called Muirchertack of the leather cloaks . Flann was also the grandmother of Muireadach +985, Bishop of Kildare.
Her grandson Donnchads son, Dubgal tanist of Ailech.
She herself was Queen of Ailech.
Her father Donncahd ua Mael was allied with her mother Muiredadach of Laigen.
by 993 Aed mac Dubgall mac Donnchad Lord of mag ith was rigdamna of Aileach.
Aeds child Niall o Neill of Ailech refused to defend Malachy against Brian and this led to his caputualtion to Brian of the kingship and weaked the stong line of descent and rule in Ireland forever.
Fergal was aslo grandson of Mael Duin lord of Fear Luirg [Lurgan] mic of conaing [conyng] Lord of Ailech ..
the Meal becomes Mel in modern useage so Mealauchlainn become Melaughlin or Mellon the southern ua Neill branch.
Neal Caille O Neill of Aileach the northern branch along wih the inseption of MalMurie of Alpine from Scotland, mother of Niall the young brother of Domnall {daniell] whose mother was a dongaille or a donnelly.
All these princes and their ladies held a place in and on the hill of an grianna close to this lis or theater wherein they could all gather in times of celabration teaching or stress protected and secure from rambling wolves and sea pirates as well as envious neighbors desiring their goods or in other conflict with this tribe.
the area today seems to be in the townland of burt some frenchman imported with the baronys although the fortress was taken by the norse and Morierity captured and made their prisoner the norse influnce seems fleeting not a permanent fixture as it reamined futher south in munster and on the east coast. I wonder why as the women were comely and the men strong and handsome???
the mothers home seems to be Ward hill or around there somplace anybody know which hill this is? jd
